Holidays in Kerala: Amazing South India Holidays

A strip of land between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, Kerala is located on the south-western tip of India. Due to its location, Kerala enjoys unique geographical features that have made it one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Asia. Fondly referred to as ‘God’s Own Country’, Kerala was selected by the National Geographic Traveller as one of the 50 destinations of a lifetime and one of the thirteen paradises in the world.

An equable climate, serene beaches, tranquil stretches of backwaters, lush hill stations and exotic wildlife are the major attractions of this land.  A unique advantage of Kerala is that most of the destinations here are only a two - four hour drive from the other.

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine and Panchakarma, the rejuvenation therapy in Ayurveda, Classical art forms, colourful festivals, exotic cuisine are some of the marvels that travelers can get to experience in this ‘God’s Own Country’.

Some of the most popular tourist attractions of Kerala includes the beaches at Kovalam, Cherai, Kappad, Muzhappilangad and Bekal, the hill stations of Munnar, Nelliampathi, Ponmudi and Wayanad as well as the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries at Periyar and Eravikulam National Park. The state also comprises of an extensive network of intertwining rivers, lakes, and canals that center on Alleppey, Kollam, Kumarakom and Punnamada. The place also witnesses the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race which is held in August and attracts a large number of tourists from within the country as well as from countries around the world.

Kochi : Popularly known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea, Kochi or Cochin has one of the world's most beautiful natural ports and is the commercial capital of Kerala. Formerly a princely state, this tropical jewel sparkles enticingly from her spice-scented shore, beckoning to distant travelers as she has done for more than three millennia. It's easy to be mesmerized by the magic of Kochi.

Munnar (1,524 M) is the highest town of Kerala, with a cool, bracing climate exuding an old-world charm. The atmosphere is fragrant with extensive tea and cardamom plantations. There are enchanting high ranges, lakes and streams and beautiful views of low-lying clouds and the mist filled valleys.

Periyar Tiger Reserve is a 777 sq km in area is set in a rich, mixed deciduous forest, interspersed with open areas of tall grass. Periyar has a splendid artificial lake dotted with snags of dead wood, which provide a perch for waterbirds; darter, grey heron, egret and kingfisher. It is one of the finest habitats for the Asiatic elephant. These enormous mammals swim in the waters and streams and usually they can be observed during the boat ride.

Kumarakom - the village of Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake, and this small water world is part of the Kuttanad region. The bird sanctuary here, which is spread across 14 acres, is a favorite haunt of migratory birds and an ornithologist's paradise. Egrets, darters, herons, teal, waterfowl, cuckoo, wild duck and migratory birds like the Siberian stork that live there in flocks are a fascination for visitors. The best way to watch the birds of the Kumarokom sanctuary is a boat trip round the islands.

Backwaters cruise : Traditional ‘Rice Boat’ (Houseboat) is one of the most fascinating way to travel in the backwaters. This is a leisurely overnight cruise on the winding ‘backwaters’ of Kerala. During this pleasant and relaxing cruise, the guests relax in the comfort of the well-appointed boat, complete with a private crew. Experience the lifestyles of the simple folk who live on the ‘backwaters’. The extensive rice fields, lying below sea level, form the area called ‘Kuttanad’, which is the ‘Rice Bowl of the South’.

The boat has on board an attendant and a cook and your every requirement will be attended to. There will be a little sitting area and private bedrooms with all facilities. Cooking will be on board, made from freshly bought produce from the local markets and the fish freshly caught!

Kovalam is a sheltered bay endowed with unusual beauty, located on the magnificent Arabian sea coast. It consists of three adjacent crescent beaches. This natural bay is a safe sea-pool, free from high waves and surges. The 22 kms drive from the Tiruvanantapuram airport to the beach through groves of palms is refreshing.  It is an ideal place to swim, sunbathe and perhaps enjoy the ancient rites of an Ayurvedic massage and oil bath.
